Amroth, Pembrokeshire

Historical Description

Amroth, a village and a parish in Pembrokeshire. The parish lies on Carmarthen Bay, 6 miles SE of Narberth, and 3 from Kilgetty station on the Pembroke and Tenby railway. It has a post office under Begelley (R.S.O.); money order office, Stepaside; telegraph office, Saundersfoot. Acreage, 2690, of which 209 are water; population, 731. Coal is worked, and fishing is carried on. Amroth Castle, delightfully situated on the coast, was formerly a grand feudal residence, and is now a fine modern mansion. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St David's; net value, £150. The church, about a mile from the village, is Early English, and has a curiously formed tower.

St. Elidyr (parish church)

The church of St. Elidyr is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, with north chapel, belonging to the Biddulph family, nave, south porch, south transept, and a lofty embattled tower of Norman date, on the north side, containing 3 bells, the lower stage forms a north transept; the nave is vaulted; the north chapel has sedilia and contains some fine monuments to the Biddulph family; several of the windows are stained, and there are 400 sittings. In the churchyard is a fine ancient cross.
