Himant, Montgomeryshire

Historical Description

Himant, a parish in Montgomeryshire, on a picturesque stream called the Barrog, 9 miles WNW of Llanfyllin. It contains the four townships of Trellan, Trefedu, Owmllech,, and Cwmhir, comprising an area of 4176 acres; population½ 245. Much of the surface is upland. There are some ancient earthworks. The living is a rectory in the diocese of St Asaph; net value, £150 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of St Asaph. The church, founded by St Illog, its patron saint, which was rebuilt in 1892 at a cost of, £1100, will always have attached to it a somewhat interesting history, as. a great portion of its present building materials have been brought from Llanwddyn, some 5 miles distant, where they constituted up to 1889 the church of that village, and where they would otherwise, like the village, be submerged at the bottom of Lake Vyniwy, the enormous reservoir which now-supplies Liverpool with water.
