Gwyddelwern, Merionethshire

Historical Description

Gwyddelwern, a village and a parish in Merionethshire. The village stands on a branch of the river Alwen, near the boundary with Denbighshire, 2½ miles N by W of Corwen, and has a station on the Denbigh and Corwen branch of the L. & N.W.R., and a post office under Corwen; money order and telegraph office, Corwen. The parish includes the townships of Bonron, Maesgwyn, Trebach, Maesgamedd, Mey-arth, Bodgynfel, Clegir, and Aelbaiarn. Acreage, 6557; population of the civil parish, 727; of the ecclesiastical, 769. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St Asaph; net value, £83 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of St Asaph. There are Calvinistic Methodist, Baptist, and Wesleyan chapels.
