Coyty or Coity, Glamorgan

Historical Description

Coyty or Coity, a village and a parish in Glamorgan, on the W. of the river Ogmore. The village is 2 miles NE of Bridgend, which is the post town. About three-quarters of the town of Bridgend are in the parish of Coyty. Population of the parish, with Nolton chapel of ease in the town of Bridgend, 4618. The manor belongs to the Earl of Dunraven. Coyty Castle, 2 miles NE by N of Bridgend, said to have been built by Griffith, son of Jestyn, the last native lord of Morganwg, was granted in 1091 to Sir Payne de Turberville; passed through the Gamages to the Wyndhams; and is now the property of the Earl of Dunraven. The oldest part of the present structure was built about 1210; it is an extensive ruin, not possessing much architectural interest. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Llandaff; net value, <£2 2 7 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Dunraven. The church was rebuilt in 1887. It is Early English, with some beautiful stained-glass windows, a fine old oak roof in the nave, and a groined roof under the tower. It contains sedilia, piscinas, two sets of squints, and several ancient monuments. There is a chapel of ease at Nolton, and a Congregational chapel.
