Castell Coch, Glamorgan

Historical Description

Castell-Coch, an ancient fort in a pass of its own name in Glamorgan, on the river Taf, 3 miles SW by S of Caer-philly. Its site is a precipitous escarpment overhanging the pass; its plan was triangular with a round tower at each corner, and its remains show features of the time of Henry III. Its name signifies " the Eed Castle" and alludes to the tint of the sandstone of which it is built.
