Cenarth or Kenarth, Carmarthenshire

Historical Description

Cenarth or Kenarth, a hamlet and a parish in Carmarthenshire. The hamlet lies on the river Teifi, 3 miles W by N of Newcastle-Emlyn, and has a post and money order office; telegraph office, Newcastle-Emlyn. The parish includes also the town of Newcastle-Emlyn, and the hamlet of Penrherber. Acreage, 6530; population of the civil parish, 1530; of the ecclesiastical district, 381. The Teifi is crossed at Cenarth hamlet by a picturesque bridge of two spans, falls immediately above the bridge over a bold ledge of rocks, and has there a famous salmon-leap, at which 100 fish have been taken in a single morning. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St David's; net value, £100 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of St David's. There is a Calvinistic Methodist chapel. In the field opposite the church called Parcydommen may be seen an interesting tumulus, and in the churchyard an ancient monumental stone (stated to be 1300 years old) with the inscription CVRCAGN —FlL'ANDAGELL (Curcagni Fili Andagilli).
