Wendlebury (St. Giles)

WENDLEBURY (St. Giles), a parish, in the union of Bicester, hundred of Ploughley, county of Oxford, 2½ miles (S. W.) from Bicester; containing 214 inhabitants. It comprises by estimation 1119 acres, of which nearly one-half is pasture and meadow. The living is a rectory, valued in the king's books at £11. 9. 4½. net income, £250; patrons, the Dean and Canons of Christ-Church, Oxford: the tithes were commuted for land and a money payment, under an inclosure act in the 39th of George III. The church, with the exception of the tower, which has stood for above 700 years, was rebuilt in 1761. The Rev. Robert Welborne, rector from 1730 to 1764, bequeathed 60 folio volumes to the parish as the foundation of a theological library.
