Marchington

Marchington.-At the Conquest Henry de Ferrers held it of the king; and it is mentioned in Domesday Book as follows :-:' Henry holds Merchametone in which are two hides, and in Edgarsley one virgat of land, Ulric formerly held it, and was a freeman. The arable land is seven carucates; in demesne there are two with one servant, eighteen villeins, and nine bordars, who have three carucates; there are forty acres of meadow; a wood affording pasture for cattle and deer, three miles in length, and one mile and a half in breadth;" and the whole is valued at 100s. It is a village and a township chapelry, and contains 2710 acres, 479 inhabitants, 109 houses, and real property valued at £5079. The living is a perpetual curacy worth £120, in the gift of the vicar of Hanbury. There is a fine monument to Sir Walfer Vernon in the church. The Primitive Methodists have a chapel here, and there is an endowed national school.
