Branstone

Branstone.-Before the Conquest Branstone was the property of Lady or the Countess Godiva. She left it to Earl Algar her son; his heir Edwin forfeited it by his opposition to William, and it was held for the king by the abbot of Burton, who held it till the dissolution of the house. Erdeswick says it was famous for grindstones; but these were not products of the place, but brought from Derbyshire for sale. The township is in the parish of Burton-upon-Trent, and contains 1490 acres, 577 inhabitants, 121 houses, and real property valued at £4394.
