Aberdaron

ABERDARON is a parish and small village in the hundred of Commitmaen, county of Carnarvon, 15 miles north-west from Pwllheli, a terminal station on the Cambrian railway, and 13 from Nevin, head of a sub-registration district in Pwllheli union, petty-sessional division and county-court district of Pwllheli, rural deanery of Lleyn, archdeaconry of Merioneth, diocese of Bangor, situated at the termination of the long peninsula of Lleyn, on the shores of a bay to which it gives its name, and surrounded by lofty cliffs. There are two small islands, known as Gnys-Gwylan, in the bay, opposite the village. The church, dedicated to St. Hywyn, is close to the water's edge; it is an ancient stone building of singular construction. The registers of baptisms and burials date from the year 1753; marriages, 1754. The living is a vicarage united with Llanfaelrhys, average tithe rent-charge £69, gross income £143 and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bangor, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Henry Lloyd of St. Bees. There are chapels for Independents, Baptists, Wesleyan Methodists and Calvinistic Methodists. The village is well known in Wales as the home of "Dick Aberdaron," a man of enormous linguistic powers, who, self taught, had mastered seventeen different languages.

The area comprises 7,248 acres, of which 4 are water; the population in 1891 was 1,170.
