Netherbury

NETHERBURY, is a village, about 2 miles, S.S.W. from Beaminster and 5 N. from Bridport in the hundred and union of Beaminster, situated on the river Birt, it contains also the hamlets of Melplaish and Salwayash, this neighbourhood abounds with orchards, which produce large quantities of apples, and much cider is made. The Church of Netherbury is a good structure, in the perpendicular style of architecture, and possesses a lofty tower, with a peal of bells therein; some portions of the edifice being in a dilapidated state, they have been judiciously repaired and the whole structure, churchyard, paths, &c. have undergone a careful restoration. The living, a vicarage, is in the gift of the prebendary of Netherbury, valued at £400. per annum. At Melplaish, a new Church has been erected and endowed, by a gentleman of London. Independent of its forming an architectural ornament to the locality, it provides spiritual instruction for a large and increasing neighbourhood. There is also an Independent Chapel at Waytown. This parish (Netherbury) contains about 6000 acres of land, and in 1841 was returned as having a population of 2162.
