Charmouth

CHARMOUTH, is a village and parish in the hundred of Whitechurch Canonicorum, 2 miles E. from Lyme Regis and 6 W. from Bridport, situate upon the sea coast in a remarkably healthy and well sheltered spot, on the side and base of a steep hill. It is much frequented by parties in the bathing season. The church a handsome structure, was erected in 1838, there is also an Independent and Wesleyan chapel, and a National and Independent school.

At the time of the great landslip, in 1839, between Axmouth and Lyme Regis, there was a partial landslip between the turnpike road and the sea on the high road leading from this place to Lyme. The parish contains 420 acres, and at the present time about 800 persons.
