Uppingham
UPPINGHAM is a market and union town or parish with a terminal station on a branch line 3¾ miles in length, opened in 1894, from Seaton junction of the London, Midland and Scottish and London and North Eastern joint railway and is 4 miles south from Manton and Uppingham station on the Syston and Peterborough and Nottingham and Kettering branches of the London, Midland and Scottish railway, 6½ south from Oakham, 12 west-south-west from Stamford, 19 east from Leicester and 90 by road from London, in the hundred of Martinsley, county court district of Stamford, Lincs, rural deanery of Rutland (third portion), archdeaconry ; of Oakham and diocese of Peterborough. The chief feature of the town is the Uppingham school, founded by Archdeacon Johnson in 1584, full particulars of which will be; found on page 799. The town consists principally of one; long street, running from east to west, and containing some good houses, shops and inns; it is paved, and lighted with gas from works on the Glaston road, established in 1837, the property of a private company. The water supply is obtained from works on the Stockerston road, also belonging to a company. In 1903-4 a well was sunk at Gretton, 22 ft. deep, and filter tunnels cut through the gravel into the ; solid blue lias formation, extending a distance of 165 feet north and 90 feet south-west, and a pumping station was built at Lyddington; there are two sets of pumping machinery, each set capable of pumping 6,000 gallons per hour after softening, the water is pumped through a 6-inch main and connected with the present system. There is also a main laid to Beaumont Chase Reservoir, holding 300,000 gallons ; the total cost amounted to £15,000. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, standing near the Market place, is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with lofty spire, containing 8 bells, dating from 1772 to 1804, and a clock, provided in 1898 in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria: in 1861 the church was greatly enlarged and thoroughly restored at a cost of over £6,000, a new hammer-beam roof of oak, with beautifully carved figures of angels being placed over the nave and a new chancel roof of oak with angel corbels erected: the ancient pulpit is of oak richly carved: the font is of serpentine marble with oak canopy and the bench ends are elaborately carved: in 1893 a stained east window was placed in the chancel as a memorial to the Rev. the Worshipful William Wales M.A. rector here 1859-79 and sometime Chancellor of Peterborough, at a cost of £375 : in the south aisle is a stained window, erected by Sergt. Robert Love to the memory of his wife and her sister, and there are several others : the organ was restored and enlarged in 1894, at a cost of nearly £400, and again in 1912, at a cost of £330: a burial ground was purchased and added to the churchyard in 1862. The register dates from the year 1571 and is in good condition. Bishop Jeremy Taylor was once rector of the parish and there are many entries in the parish register in his handwriting. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £920, chiefly arising from 230 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Peterborough, and held since 1920 by the Rev. George Leyburn Richardson B.D. of Durham University, proctor in Convocation, hon. canon of Peterborough and surrogate.
The Congregational chapel, Adderley street, founded in 1700, and rebuilt in 1847, is an edifice of red brick, seating 280 persons, and was renovated in 1903 at a cost of £170; there are also Wesleyan Methodist and Baptist chapels.
The Mutual Improvement Society was founded in 1861. The Institute and Lecture Hall, a substantial building of stone on the London road, has a library and reading and class rooms; the library contains about 4,500 volumes; there is also a billiard room.
The market, held on Wednesday, is well attended. Fairs for cattle are held on the second Wednesday in March and July.
There are charities of about £53 annual value for distribution, left by the Rev. __ Standish and E. Fawkener.
About a mile from the town on the Leicester road is a mound, bearing the remains of military works, called Castle Hill: from the summit are fine views of the surrounding country. The trustees of the Earl of Gainsborough (who is a minor) are lords of the manor. There is also a small rectorial manor, of which the rector for the time being is lord. The landowners are the trustees of the Earl of Gainsborough, Lord Norton and the rector. The parish comprises 1,380 acres ; the population in 1921 was 2,453.
BEAUMONT CHASE, formerly extra-parochial, is now a parish in Uppingham ecclesiastical parish, 1½ miles west from Uppingham, on the borders of Leicestershire. The area is 454 acres; the population in 1921 was 14. In 1885 a detached part. of Uppingham, known as Preston Leys and Preston Leys Plantation, was amalgamated with this parish.

EDUCATIONAL.
Uppingham School (Archdeacon Johnson's School & Hospital).
Archdeacon Johnson's Rutland charity, which embraces the schools of Uppingham & Oakham & a provision for certain poor pensioners, called the Bede-House people, was founded by Robert Johnson, Archdeacon of Leicester, in the year 1584; he endowed the charity with certain lands & impropriations (in different parishes), the value of which is now (1928) about £2,900 yearly, & appointed governors for the management of the whole foundation : now, however, each school has its own separate body of trustees, & the governors manage the estate & appoint the Bede-House people (after paying the expenses & repairs on the estates two-sevenths of the net surplus is given to Uppingham schools; a similar amount to Oakham schools; & the remainder to the Bede-House pensioners). Uppingham school is under the management of 19 trustees, appointed under the provisions of a scheme prepared by the Endowed Schools Commissioners & sanctioned in Council 13th May, 1875. Uppingham school began to be gradually remodelled in 1854, when there was but one boarding house & about 30 boarders; there are now (1928) thirteen boarding houses (including the school-house) & about 480 boys, & the income from the foundation is about £800 yearly; the buildings include a fine large school-room & a chapel. A well-equipped hall, situated in High street and the School lane, with accommodation for 1,000 people, was completed in 1924, as a memorial to Old Uppinghamians who served and fell in the Great War, 1914-18 : adjoining is a special block of new classrooms. The opening ceremony was performed by Gen. Sir Charles H. Harington G.B.E., K.C.B., D.S.O. There are three exhibitions vacant every year, of the value of about £50 each, tenable at some university, or other place of learned, scientific or professional education, for three years: it is required that candidates shall have been at Uppingham school for the two years previous to the election : there are also sixteen exhibitions at the following colleges in Cambridge:- St. John's, Clare, Emmanuel & Sidney Sussex; four at each, about £50 yearly, to which scholars from Uppingham & Oakham have the preference: the trustees assign out of the tuition fees £100 annually for prizes: there is an examination twice every year, in certain selected English books, with questions on language & literature, prizes up to £5 are awarded if sufficient merit be shown ; other prizes up to £4 are open to boys in the second hundred of the school, & prizes of £3 to boys in the third hundred: an examination is held in May or June annually, for scholarships, varying in number & in value from £85 to £30 per annum : there are also two Rutland scholarships of the value of £25 per annum each, tenable for two years at either Oakham or Uppingham school. There are also special engineering classes. Connected with the foundation is a hospital; annuities to the amount of £12 each are given from the funds to decayed tradesmen, widows & others
