Oxfordshire
OXFORDSHIRE, sometimes called Oxon, is an inland shire; it lies along the north shore of the Thames, the windings of which it follows, and it is, therefore, very irregular in shape, being in some places only 7 miles across, and in others, as in the north-west, 28; its greatest length is about 50 miles; it runs in a north-west and south-east, direction, having its longest dimensions on the river side.
