NORTHAMPTONSHIRE is an inland shire, in the Midlands, near the centre of England, and is of a long but irregular shape, running from south-west to north-east; the river Welland flows along its northern border, dividing it from Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire. It is bounded by these three counties on the north, and on the east by Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, on the south-east by Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, on the south by Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, and on the west by Warwickshire and Oxfordshire. Its length from north-east to south-west is about 70 miles; its width varies from 7 or 8 miles to 25 miles.
