Hampshire

HAMPSHIRE, or the county of Southampton, is on the south coast of England, forming an irregular square, and lying about midway between the two southern ends of the island. A broad channel lies between the mainland and the Isle of Wight, which is reckoned as a part of the shire. The town of Southampton, with its neighbourhood, forms a shire. Hampshire is bounded on the north by Berks, on the east by Surrey and Sussex, on the south by the English Channel, and on the west by Dorsetshire and Wiltshire.
