East Hendred

East Hendred is a parish on the road from Wantage to Reading, 2 miles south from Steventon station on the Great Western railway, 4 east from Wantage, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wantage and in the rural deanery of Wantage, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. This village was once a populous and thriving market town and one of the seats of the cloth manufacture, and by a charter of Henry VI. enjoyed various privileges. It is very picturesque and is a favourite resort of artists. The stewardship of the King's Manor in this parish is a nominal office, in the gift of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and is one of the offices which may be accepted for the purpose of vacating a seat in the House of Commons.
Transcribed from Kelly's Directory of Berkshire, 1915
