Childrey is a parish about 2½ miles west from Wantage and 2½ south-west from the Challow station on the Great Western railway, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wantage and in the rural deanery of Wantage, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The Berks and Wilts canal separates this parish from West Challow: the name is derived from its situation at the source of the Cillarethe brook, but there seems to be no mention of it, as a village, in the old chronicles.
