Somerton (St. Margaret)
SOMERTON (St. Margaret), a parish, in the union of Sudbury, hundred of Babergh, W. division of Suffolk, 9 miles (S. S. W.) from Bury St. Edmund's; containing 143 inhabitants, and consisting of 995 acres. The living is a rectory, valued in the king's books at £6. 16. 8., and in the gift of the Marquess of Downshire: the tithes have been commuted for £287. 10.; the glebe comprises 40 acres. The church, which stands on high ground, and commands an extensive prospect, has some remains of Norman architecture, and contains the family vault of Viscount Blundell.
