Shadwell

SHADWELL, a township, in the parish of Thorner, Lower division of the wapentake of Skyrack, W. riding of York, 5¾ miles (N. N. E.) from Leeds; containing 278 inhabitants. The township comprises by computation 1250 acres; and includes Red Hall, an ancient mansion which was the birth-place of one of the dukes of Norfolk. A church was erected in 1842: the living is a perpetual curacy, in the gift of the Vicar of Thorner, with an income of £100. The tithes were commuted for land and a money payment, under an act of inclosure, in the year 1803. There is a place of worship for Wesleyans.
