Morton
MORTON, a township, in the parish of Ainderby-Steeple, union of Northallerton, wapentake of Gilling-East, N. riding of York, 3½ miles (W. S. W.) from Northallerton; containing 252 inhabitants. It comprises 1533a. 25p.: the Earl of Harewood is lord of the manor, and part owner of the soil. The village, which is long and scattered, is on the eastern acclivities of Swaledale: the river Swale is crossed here by a good bridge of four arches. The impropriate tithes have been commuted for £241. 5., and there is a glebe of 3 acres. The Wesleyans have a place of worship.
