Battersby

BATTERSBY, a township, in the parish of Ingleby-Greenhow, W. division of the liberty of Langbaurgh, N. riding of York, 5ΒΌ miles (E. by S.) from Stokesley; containing 93 inhabitants. This was an ancient demesne of the crown, and according to the Domesday survey was called Badresbi; it was afterwards the property of the Balliols, and at an early period came to the Percys, with whom it continued till the time of Elizabeth, after which the estate passed to the Eures and the family of Foulis. The township lies near the road between Whitby and Stokesley, through Kildale; and forms part of the district named Cleveland.
