Huish or Hewish, a parish in Wiltshire, under the Marl-borough Downs, 3 miles NNW of Pewsey station on the- G.W.R. Post town, Pewsey. Acreage, 738; population of the civil parish, 115; of the ecclesiastical, 123. The manor belonged to the Somerset family, and was given in 1690 to the College of Froxfield. The story is that the Duke of Somerset married a dairymaid 200 years ago, and she being unnoticed by his relations, eventually left the manor of Huish and all money she could to found the Somerset hospital, generally known as Froxfield College, Rector of Huish is ex-officw chaplain (honorary) of Froxfield College. Hewish Hill has extensive vestiges of an ancient British village. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; net value, £130 with residence. Patrons, the Trustees of Froxfield College. The church is a stone building in the Early English style, and was restored in 1879.

The church of St. Nicholas is a plain building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a turret containing one bell: an organ chamber with vestry was built and the church completely restored in 1879, at a cost of £1,050: there are 120 sittings.
