Corsley, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Corsley, a parish in Wiltshire, on the border of Somerset, 3¼ miles from Frome, and 4½ from Warminster station on the G.W.R. It includes the hamlets of Whitbourne Springs, Temple, Longhedge, Whitbourne Moor, &c., together with part of Chapmanslade. It has a post office under Warminster. Acreage, 3056; population, 926. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; value, £195 with residence. Patron, the Marquis of Bath. The church, dedicated to St Margaret, was rebuilt in 1837. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels.

Church of England

St. Margaret (parish church)

The church of St. Margaret, rebuilt about 1833, is of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of nave and a tower containing 6 bells: there is no chancel: the church was restored and the galleries taken down in 1890, and affords 400 sittings.

St. Mary's Chapel of Ease, Temple

The chapel of ease of St. Mary, at Temple, a building in the Gothic style, was erected in 1902, in accordance with the will of the late Mrs. Barton, of Corsley House, who bequeathed £4,500 for its erection. It will seat 120 persons.
