Codford St Mary, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Codford St Mary, a parish in Wilts, on the river Wiley, near Codford station on the G.W.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Bath. Acreage, 2129; population, 322. Codford Hill is crowned by a curious earthwork, called Ogbury or Codford Circle, supposed to have been formed by Druids for religious rites, and commands a most interesting view. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; value, £410. Patron, St John's College, Oxford. The church is Later English, in good condition, and there is a Congregational chapel.

Church of England

St Mary (parish church)

The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, south aisle, south porch and an ancient western tower, containing 3 bells: the chancel is Transitional, and the tower of the 16th century: the chancel arch is late Norman, elaborately carved: in the chancel aisle is a monument to the Mompesson family: the communion table was made from the old pulpit of the church of St. Mary the Virgin, Oxford; the handsome altar cloth was worked by Mrs. Ashley Dodd, late of Stockton House; the east window is stained: the church was restored in 1879 at a cost of £1,200, and has 200 sittings.


Congregational Chapel

The Congregational chapel was founded in 1778, with Sunday school: the chapel has 200 sittings.
