Chilmark, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Chilmark, a village and a parish in Wilts. The village stands near the Roman road to Bath, 2½ miles WNW of. Dinton station on the L. & S.W.R., and 4 E of Hindon, and has a post office under Salisbury; money order and telegraph office, Tisbury. The parish includes also the tithing of Ridge. Acreage, 3210; population, 490. Part of the surface is down. A Portland bed freestone, which furnished the material for Salisbury cathedral, is extensively quarried. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; value, £328. The church is excellent, and was restored in 1877. John de Chilmark, the Archimedes of the time of Richard II., was a native.

St. Margaret (parish church)

The church of St. Margaret is an ancient structure, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, transepts, north aisle, south porch, and a noble tower springing from the intersection, with a spire and containing a clock and 6 bells, two having been added in 1877: an ancient Norman doorway forms the entrance to the aisle: beneath a pointed arch in the south wall of the chancel and in the transept are piscinae: the east window and several others are stained: the church was restored in 1856, at a cost of £1,700. In the churchyard is a modern lychgate.
