Alderley Edge, Cheshire
Historical Description
Chorley or Alderley Edge, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Cheshire, 5½ miles NW of Macclesfield. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office, of the name of Alderley Edge, under Manchester, and a station of the same name on the Manchester and Crewe branch of the L. & N.W.R. Acreage, 1338; population, 2141. The township is governed by a local board of nine members. There is a public hall and a working men's club, a temperance and mission hall, and a bank. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; net value, £340 with residence. The church is recent. The ecclesiastical parish of St John the Evangelist was formed in 1877, and is partly also in the townships of Fulshaw and Pownall Fee. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
