Ilton, Somerset
Historical Description
Ilton, a village and a parish in Somerset. The village stands 2 miles NNW of Ilminster station on the G.W.R., and has a post office under Ilminster; money order and telegraph office, Ilminster. The civil parish contains the hamlets of Ashford an-d Ilford; the ecclesiastical parish contains also the hamlet of Eapps. Acreage, 1668; population of the civil parish, 382; of the ecclesiastical, 364. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Bath and Wells; net value, £164 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The church, which is Decorated English and Early Perpendicular, was restored in 1860, and consists of nave, N aisle, transept, chancel, and chancel aisle, with tower. The spire became much dilapidated, and for safety was removed in 1887. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
