Chilcompton, Somerset

Historical Description

Chilcompton, a parish in Somerset, near the east end of the Mendip Hills, with a station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 135 miles from London, and 7½ NE by N of Wells. It has a post office under Bath; money order and telegraph office, Stratton-on-the-Fosse. Acreage, 1257; population, 648. Coal and red sandstone occur. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Bath and Wells; value, £120. The church is modern. There are a Wesleyan chapel.
