Wootton, Oxfordshire

Historical Description

Wootton, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands on the river Glyme and the Dome stream, 2½ miles N by W of Woodstock, and 3 W from Bletchington station on the Oxford and Birmingham section of the G.W.R., and has a post and money order office under Woodstock; telegraph office, Woodstock. The parish is in the union of Woodstock. Acreage, 4274; population, 705. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belongs to the Duke of Marlborough. Woodleys is a chief residence. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford; net value, £400 with residence. Patron,New College, Oxford. The church is in the Early English and Later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, N aisle, S porch, and tower, and contains some ancient memorials. There are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels.
