Waterperry, Oxfordshire
Historical Description
Waterperry, a parish, with Thornley hamlet, in Oxfordshire, 2 miles ENE of Wheatley station on the Maidenhead and Oxford branch of the G.W.R., and 7½ E of Oxford. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Wheatley, under Oxford. Acreage, 1936; population of civil parish, 164; of ecclesiastical, 182. The ecclesiastical parish includes Thornley township. The manor, with Waterperry House, a handsome mansion in the Classic style standing in a park of about 40 acres, and all the land, belongs to the Henley family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; net value, £103 with residence. The church, which stands within the park of Waterperry House, is an ancient and picturesque building in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, S aisle, and an ivy-clad western tower of wood. It has some very ancient stained glass, an effigy of a knight in plate armour, dating from the early part of the 15th century, and some ancient brasses.
