Barton Steeple, Oxfordshire

Historical Description

Barton-Steeple, a township and a parish in Oxfordshire. The township lies on the river Dome, a tributary of the Evenlode, 2½ miles W of Heyford station on the G.W.R., and 4½ SSW of Deddington. The parish includes also the townships of Middle-Barton and Seswclls Barton; and its post town is Oxford, which is the money order office; telegraph office, Middle-Barton. Acreage, 3046; population of the civil parish, 814; of the ecclesiastical, 798. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; gross yearly value, .6114 with residence. Patrons, the Duke of Marlborough and the Hall family. The church is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.
