Shipton under Wychwood, Oxfordshire
Historical Description
Shipton-under-Wychwood, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands on the river Evenlode, near the West Midland section of the G.W.R., 4 miles NNE of Burford, and 7 SSE of Chipping Norton. It has a station on the railway, and a post and money order office under Chipping Norton; telegraph office, at the railway station. The original parish included the ecclesiastical parish of Leafield and the townships of Milton, Langley, and Eamsden, which are noticed, separately, the hamlet of Lyneham, and a large tract of Wych-wood Forest. Area of Shipton, 2520 acres; population, 743; of Leafield, 901 acres; population, 734; of Milton, 2080 acres;. population, 898; of Lyneham, 1943 acres; population, 192; of Langley, 303 acres; population, 66; and of Wychwood, 3782 acres; population, 212. Milton, with Lyneham and Bruern, has now been made a separate ecclesiastical parish with a vicarage. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. There is a memorial cross in the village which was erected in 1878, a public recreation ground of about 4 acres, and a hall which is used for entertainments was built in 1885. Shipton Court is a fine old Tudor mansion, and Shipton Lodge is a chief residence. The living is a vicarage, with Langley annexed, in the diocese of Oxford; joint net value, £340 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Oxford. The church is a spacious building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel with transept, nave, aisles, S porch, and a western tower surmounted by an octagonal broach spire, with eight bells. It contains a fine alabaster and marble monument to Sir Chandos Stanhope Hoskyns Reade, Bart., which was erected in 1890, some ancient brasses, and some good stained windows. Some remains of a monastery, in Later English architecture, adjoin the churchyard. There are a Baptist chapel and several small charities.
