Shiplake, Oxfordshire
Historical Description
Shiplake, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands on an eminence adjacent to the Thames, 1 mile WSW of a station of its own name on the Henley branch of the G.W.R., 3½ miles S by E of Henley, and 4½ NE from Reading, commands a fine view, and has a postal wall-box under Henley-on-Thames; money order and telegraph office, Wargrave. The parish comprises 2740 acres; population of civil parish, 756; of ecclesiastical, 686. There is a parish council consisting of seven members and a chairman. The Loddon enters the Thames near Shiplake lock, and the village is a favourite resort of anglers, boating men, and cyclists. Crowsley Park, a fine ancient mansion of red brick surrounded by a deer park of 250 acres, is the seat of the Baskerville family, who own the manor and most of the land. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; net value, £266 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Canons of Windsor. The church, which is a building of flint, stone, and chalk, is in mixed styles from the Transition Norman period downwards. It has a Decorated font and some fine ancient stained glass, originally from the Abbey of St. Bertin at St. Omer. Granger, the author of the " Biographical History of England," was vicar.
