Langford, Oxfordshire
Historical Description
Langford, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands 2 miles from the boundary with Gloucestershire, 2- from that with Berks, 3½ NE of Lechlade, and 3 SW of Alvescot station on the G.W.R., and has a post office under Lechlade; money order office, Filkins; telegraph office, Lechlade. The parish contains also the hamlets of Grafton and Eadcot. Acreage, 3183; population of the civil parish, 447; of the ecclesiastical parish, 447. Most of the property belongs to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Grafton Manor belongs to the Dean and Students of Christ Church, Oxford. The river Isis runs on the S boundary, and is crossed there "by a bridge of the 13th century. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; net value, £248 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Oxford. The church is a very ancient building in the Norman and Later styles, and there are also Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels.
