Fritwell, Oxfordshire

Historical Description

Fritwell, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands on the N border of the county, 2½ miles ENE of Sumerton station on the G.W.R., and 5 NW byNof Bicester, and has a post office under Banbury; money order office, Souldem; telegraph office, Aynho. The parish comprises 1743 acres; population of the civil parish, 567; of the ecclesiastical, 560. The manor house is an old picturesque edifice, and has a dismal room like a den in which Sir Baldwin Wake immured his brother. The living is a vicarage in the" diocese of Oxford; net yearly value, £173 with residence. The church is ancient and has a Saxon porch. There are two Wesleyan Methodist chapels.
