East and West Shutford, Oxfordshire
Historical Description
Shutford, East and West, are townships in Swalcliffe parish, Oxfordshire, 5 miles W from Banbury station on the L. & N.W.R. and G.W.R. They have a post office, of the name of Shutford, under Banbury; money order and telegraph-office, Swalcliffe. Area of East Shutford, 409 acres; population, 21; of West Shutford, 952 acres; population, 339. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor of East Shutford belongs to Lord Saye and Sele, who is also sole landowner. The manorial rights of West Shutford have become extinct. The living is annexed to the vicarage of Swalcliffe. The church, dedicated to St Martin,. is a small but ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style. There are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels.
