Historical Description
Cowley, Middle, Temple, and Church, a parish, part of which is within the municipal and parliamentary limits of Oxford, in Oxfordshire, adjacent to the river Thames, half a mile NW from Littlemore station on the G.W.R., and extending 2½ miles SSE from Oxford. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Oxford. Acreage, 1423; population, 10,339. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; net yearly value, £161 with residence. Patron, Christ Church, Oxford. The church, an ancient building of stone in mixed styles, was restored and enlarged in 1865. There is a Wesleyan chapel. The Oxford Military College for sons of officers and candidates for the military service, founded in 1876, is in this parish. For Cowley St John, see OXFORD.
