Warsop, Nottinghamshire
Historical Description
Warsop, a village, a township, and a parish in Notts. The village stands on the river Meden, 5 miles NNE of Mansfield railway station, was once a market-town, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Mansfield. The township contains Church Warsop, Market Warsop, Nettleworth, and Gleadthorpe, and is governed by a district council, and comprises 6183 acres; population, 1467; of the ecclesiastical parish, 1510. There is an urban district council of thirteen members. The parish also comprises the township of Sookholme. The manor belongs to the baronet family of Fitz-Herbert. Nettleworth Hall and Park Ball are chief residences. There are limestone quarries and gravel pits and collieries. The living is a rectory, with Holme annexed, in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £250 with residence. The church is an ancient building, and was restored in 1878. There are Wesleyan and Reformed Wesleyan chapels, a mission room, and charities, £120. Bishop Halifax was rector.
