Hawton, Nottinghamshire
Historical Description
Hawton, a village and a parish in Notts. The village stands near the river Devon, 2 miles SSW of Newark station on the G.N.R. and M.R., and was nearly destroyed during the Civil War. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Newark. The parish comprises 2181 acres; population, 246. Large quantities of gypsum are found, and there are a brickfield, and an iron and brass foundry. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £490 with residence. Patron, the lord of the manor and chief landowner. The church is mainly Early English, partly Decorated English; and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with a pinnacled tower; was thoroughly repaired in 1880, and a new porch erected in 1887. The chancel contains an Easter sepulchre, sedilia, and is rich in canopy and monumental work.
