Winterton, Norfolk
Historical Description
Winterton, a parish, with a village, in Norfolk, on the coast, 1 mile from Hemsby station on the Midland and Great Northern Joint railway, and 8 miles N by W of Yarmouth, with a post and money order office under Yarmouth; telegraph office, Hemsby. Acreage, 1370; population of the civil parish, 723; of the ecclesiastical, with East Somerton, 785. It had once a market and a fair, and it gives the title of Earl to the family of Turnour. The manor belongs to the Earl of Winterton. Hill House is the chief residence. Winterton Lighthouse stands on elevated ground, and shows a fixed light visible at the distance of 14 miles. There is a considerable fishery and a coastguard station. The living is a rectory, united with East Somerton, in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £400 with residence. The church is an edifice of stone, and has an embattled tower 140 feet high. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.
