Scole or Osmondiston, Norfolk
Historical Description
Scole or Osmondiston, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands on the river Waveney, 1½ mile E by S of Diss station on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the G.E.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office, of the name of Scole, and formerly had a fair on Easter-Tuesday. The parish comprises 1587 acres; population of the civil parish, 673; of the ecclesiastical, 591. Under the Local Government Act, Scole, Thorpe Pana, and Freuse were combined, and have a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belongs to Lady Bateman. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £264 with residence. The church is an ancient structure of flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, S aisle, S porch, and an embattled western tower. Thorpe Parva, 1 mile W, now forms part of the civil parish of Scole, but for ecclesiastical purposes is annexed to Billingford. It was formerly a separate parish, and the ruins of its church are still standing. Frense also forms part of the civil parish of Scole.
