Historical Description
Heaton Norris, a township in Lancashire, containing seven parishes witliin the borders of the ancient parish of Manchester. The township is suburban to Stockport, and stands on the verge of Lancashire, on the river Mersey, on the L. & N.W. and Cheshire Lines, at the terminus of the Ashton, Manchester, and Oldham Canal, 5¾ miles SSE of Manchester. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office (T.S.O.) under Stockport, besides five railway stations, several good hotels, seven parish and three mission churches, and several dissenting chapels. Seven bridges, one a foot bridge, connect it with Stockport. A viaduct, 1780 feet long, 108 high, with twenty-two arches, erected at a cost of £75, 000, takes the L. & N.W.R. across the Mersey. An extensive luggage depot is connected with the N.W.R. station. Christ Church was built in 1846; is a handsome edifice in the Pointed style; and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with an elegant spire. The Wycliffe Congregational Chapel is an ornamental Gothic structure. The town shares generally in the trade of Stockport, and has large cotton factories, iron foundries, machine works, rope works, and saw mills. The greater part of the township is in the county borough of Stockport, and includes Broomfield, Grundy Hill, Heaton Mersey, and Shawfold. Area of entire township, 2116 acres; population, 23, 532.
