Woodnesborough, Kent

Historical Description

Woodnesborough or Winsborough, a village and a parish in Kent. The village stands 1½ mile SW of Sandwich station on the S.E.R., is believed to occupy the site of a Roman settlement, and has a post office under Dover; telegraph office, Sandwich. The parish includes several villages and comprises 2940 acres; population, 921. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. Roman remains have been found near Statenborough, and many Saxon antiquities on Woodnesborough Hill. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury; net value, £225 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Rochester. The church is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style. There is a small Congregational chapel.
