Pluckley cum Pevington, Kent

Historical Description

Pluckley-cum-Pevington, a village and a parish in Kent. The village has a station on the S.E.R., 50 miles from London, and 6 W of Ashford. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Ashford. Acreage of parish, 3094; population, 898. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. It commands splendid views over the wealds of Kent and Sussex. There are brick and tile works in the parish. Surrenden Dering is the seat of Sir Edward Cholmley Dering, who is lord of the manor. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury; net value, £460 with residence. Patron, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The church was built in the time of Henry II. by Richard de Pluckley; is Early English, with inserted Later English windows; comprises nave, aisles, and two chancels; and contains brasses and monuments of the Derings. St Mary's Church was built in 1882, and is a small brick edifice in the Early English style. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
