East Peckham, Kent
Historical Description
Peckham, East, a village and a parish in Kent. The village stands 1½ mile NW of Yalding station on the S.E.R., and 51 miles NE by E of Tonbridge. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Tonbridge. Acreage of parish, 3410; population, 2002. There is a parish council of eleven members. Roydon Hall was formerly the seat of the Twysdehs, and is now. The seat of the Gordon-Lennox family. There is a large tannery. The river Medway passes through the parish, and has a wharf at Branbridges. Large quantities of hops are grown in the neighbourhood. A section was constituted a parochial district, under the name of The Holy Trinity, in 1843. Both the head living and that of Trinity are vicarages in the diocese of Canterbury; net value of the former, £430 with residence; of the latter, £300 with residence. Patrons of the former, the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury; of the latter, the Vicar of East Peckham. The parochial church, restored in 1885, consists of nave, S aisle, chancel, and private chapel, with a tower. Trinity Church, built in 1842, is a neat edifice with a bell-turret. There are Wesleyan, Methodist, and Baptist chapels.
