Denton (Gravesend), Kent

Historical Description

Denton, a parish in Kent, on the river Thames, and 1 mile from Gravesend station on the L.C. & D.R. and S.E.R. It is ecclesiastically annexed to Milton-next-Gravesend. The Port of London Sanitary Hospital for Seamen is in the parish. It is a large brick structure, and available for 40 patients. The Corporation of Gravesend Sanatorium was opened in 1887, and will bold 10 patients. In connection with it is a smallpox hospital with six beds. Acreage, 438 of land and 91 of water; population, 501. There is no church.

St. Mary (parish church)

The church of St. Mary, for years in a ruinous condition, was in 1901 restored by the owner of Denton Court: it consists only of the east end of the nave and the chancel, the chancel arch and the eastern window of the chancel remained comparatively perfect.
