Boughton Aluph, Kent

Historical Description

Boughton-Aluph, a parish in Kent, adjacent to the river Stour, 14 mile WNW of Wye station on the S.E.R., and 4 miles NNE of Ashford. It contains Boughton-Lees, which has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Ashford. Acreage, 2425 : population, 571. The manor belonged in the time of King John to Alulph de Boughton. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury, and is now joined to the rectory of Eastwell; value, £480 with residence. The church is ancient and cruciform, with a central tower, and contains a piscina and monuments of the Moyles. It was thoroughly restored in 1893. A remarkable 15th century fresco of the Holy Trinity was discovered, and also a piscina, in the south transept.

All Saints (parish church)

The church of All Saints is a cruciform structure of flint and ashlar, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and has a central tower containing 5 bells: there are several monuments and a wall painting, date about 1480: the church was reseated in 1878 and in 1893 was restored at a cost of £1,200: and now affords 300 sittings.
