Edgcott, Buckinghamshire

Historical Description

Edgcott, a village and a parish in Buckinghamshire, 3 miles SSW from Claydon station on the L. & N.W.R., and 7½ S by W from Buckingham. Post town. Aylesbury; money order office, Grendon; telegraph office, Marsh Gibbon. Acreage, 1140; population, 150. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford. The church is a small but ancient building of stone in the Early English style. There is a small Wesleyan chapel.

St. Michael (parish church)

The parish church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the south doorway is Perpendicular, and the font Decorated: some of the woodwork is of the 16th century: the vestry was added in 1875 by the Rev. M. W . Davies M.A. rector 1874-1905: there is a brass tablet bearing the names of the men of the parish who lost their lives in the Great War, 1914-18: there are 90 sittings.
