Wootton St Lawrence, Hampshire

Historical Description

Wootton St Lawrence, a parish, with a village and three tithings, in Hants, 3½ miles W of Basingstoke station on the L. & S.W.R. It has a post and money order office under Basingstoke; telegraph office, Sherborne St John. Acreage, 4406; population of the civil parish, 945; of the ecclesiastical, 607. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. Manydown House and Tangier Park are chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; net value, £140 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Winchester. The church was rebuilt and enlarged in 1864, and contains monuments of the Hooke and Wither families.
